West Tokyo Preschool (WTPS) is a private and independent Preschool for 3, 4 and 5 year olds. WTPS was established in 1972 by two teachers from the American School in Japan (ASIJ) and until 1977 was located at the Lutheran Seminary near ICU campus. It was then moved to the ASIJ campus. WTPS moved to its current location in 1983. WTPS was originally created to meet the needs of ASIJ teachers and the foreign business community near ASIJ. It has now expanded to include children of English speaking multi-cultural families in the West Tokyo area. It was incorporated with and continues to maintain an American cultural atmosphere and celebrates and observes American holidays and customs. WTPS was formerly known as West Tokyo Nursery. In March 1990 its new name was adopted to reflect a more accurate description of the program.

The lessons and/or activities provided in the classroom setting comply with these goals and meet the standards of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Council of Exceptional Children (CEC), and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
We believe in an open environment in which each child is free to investigate and experiment. Play is a child's way of learning. Through play a child meets new challenges and gains understanding of his/her environment. A trained teacher and assistant are with the children at all times. The curriculum offers a balance of individual and group activities designed to promote creativity, self-esteem, language development, cognitive skills, physical fitness, environment awareness and social skills.
WTPS is located in a sunny first floor residence and is equipped with a kitchen. The Preschool is situated in a quiet neighborhood near ASIJ. Teachers and children walk to the neighborhood playground for daily outdoor playtime and activities.
Our Preschool program offers a 9:00am-1:00pm session for 3 - 5 year olds. You may choose to send your child for 3 or 5 days.
An optional Extended Day Program operates from 1:00pm-3:00pm, October to June for eligible 4 - 5 year olds from within the regular program. This Extended Day Program is designed to enrich language and prepare the children for school entry.

WTPS follows the ASIJ holiday calendar. In addition two Japanese holidays are also observed.
